Runes are the in-game currency used to level up and equip characters in Elden Ring, buy gear and more. While some can be obtained through defeating enemies and bosses in Elden Ring, their main source comes from Great Runes.

Beating most demi-god bosses in the Lands Between unlocks Great Runes, items with unique buffs when activated. These can be unlocked at Divine Towers and activated with a Rune Arc until death occurs.

What Are Runes?

One of the more befuddling moments in From Software's Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree DLC occurs when players reach a certain point and witness "Somewhere, a great rune has broken." As in Bloodborne, Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree seems to have some sort of mysterious magical system at play here too.

Elden ring runes serve both as currency and experience points, awarded to Tarnished for defeating enemies or bosses and providing upgrades for weapons and gear.

Great Runes are rare rewards from defeating bosses that provide players with an immense advantage once activated. To activate them, head directly to the Divine Tower connected with that particular boss whose rune you received and activate it there.

Other runes are more commonly encountered, often found laying around or inside glowing skulls that players can squish to obtain them. These items can typically be found in dungeons and outside shrines; some even can be collected after character death at Sites of Grace.

How Do I Get Runes?

How Do I Cast Runes?

Elden Ring requires skill, luck and runes in equal measures to succeed. The game's main bosses offer powerful runes for your Tarnished character's development; additionally, Shadow of Erdree DLC adds even more options for enhancement.

No matter your goal - weapon damage, HP recovery or spell efficiency - equipping a Great Rune at any Site of Grace is sure to help improve it! But for best results it must first be activated; one at a time is all that's allowed!

If you want to maximize the potential of your active Great Runes, the Golden Scarab Talisman should be acquired as soon as possible, as this increases rune rewards by 20%. Once equipped, equip it at Sites of Grace and activate it via shoulder button - switch incantations by pressing up on D-pad!

What Do Runes Mean?

Runes in Elden Ring work similarly to Souls from FromSoftware's previous games, acting both as player XP and purchasing currency at Merchants across The Lands Between. When you die, runes will also leave behind bloodstains at their place of defeat that can be recovered by visiting this location and speaking to its associated NPCs.

After defeating most major Bosses, players will acquire Great Runes as rewards; these may seem confusing at first, as there is little explanation in-game about what their purpose or use are. To activate a Great Rune from its respective boss' Divine Tower.

Players may also acquire Golden elden ring runes by level , which can be used to reallocate previously assigned attribute points at the Finger Reader in Leyndell. Unlike Great Runes, however, Golden Runes remain in your inventory upon death until either cashed in or discarded by you.
